Five-ringed “Giraffe” Necklace, Jean Dunand

Oréum and lacquer, c. 1927

*

Worn by glamorous women like Josephine Baker, these “Giraffe” necklaces were made of a gold alloy called “Oréum”.  It remains unclear if Société Oréum produced the jewelry pieces and had Dunand decorate them, or if Dunand himself had the pieces produced from his own designs.  However, the enamel work is typical of Dunand’s style and skillful mastery of the techniques employed.

“Without being preoccupied by portraying a subject, [Dunand] explores lines and planes like a musician playing with sounds and silences.” - Edmond de Campagnac
